Comment:

Hi I have windows 2000 pro with Service pack. Hard disk 40 GB with 4 partitions (All are NTFS partitions). RAM 256 MB. I have almost all the necessary basic programes downloaded in C drive. Now for the recent days i have noticed problem in C:/Program files folder. If i right click the "C:/ Program files" and clicked properties and check in the general TAB ...the attribute of the folder "C:/Program files" is marked as read only. I tried to remove that "read only" attribute. The attribute is temporarily removing but if i close the properties and again check this folder properties.... It is again marked as read only.. Eventhough i have full control, administrative rights .. i could not able to uncheck the read only attribute for this folder... But all the other folders are normal.... I have problem only with this folder .... Please give some guidance regarding the above requests..

Thank you BUDDY

I'm sure you mean C:\Program Files. The Read-Only attribute on this is normal. No need to attempt to change it.

Did you look at the MSKB?

"Hi I have windows 2000 pro with Service pack". This isn't important to answer your question but with service pack could mean SP1, 2, 3, or SP4.

hi Jennifer, Thanks for your kind reply... As you said The read only attribute may be normal for the folder C:/Program files.

My system is a standalone system. Not Connected to any network. We 5 members are using this system. I am only the person having Administrative rights... All others are power users.... Almost all of my necessary program files are installed only in the folder C:/Program files.

But now the problem is ..since i am logging as administrator i could not face any problems. But the other 4 members who are logging thru their respective loggins without the adminstrative rights.. could not able to access some programs like MS_WORD, MS_EXCEL... Adobe photoshop...Etc.

But if i give them Administrative rights then can able to access all the programs without any problem. But for saftey consideration i should not give them administrative rights.. So pl tell me wheather there is any solution for other members to work all program fully without administrative rights...

Thank you BUDDY

And set file permissions for the Microsoft Office folder. Although, users by default have the ability to run those programs...unless you changed something in the permissions.

Correct the Permissions on the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office folder. Set to not Inherit from Parent, and make sure you check the box to Replace permission entries on all child objects....
