I purchased a Memorex Flash drive but my system does not recognize it. When I connect the flash drive to the computer the new hardware wizard appears but as I continue a message appears saying the driver for the hardware cannot be found. I downloaded the driver from the Memorex website for the device but during the installation I received a message saying the driver is not required for Windows 2000. How can I get the computer to recognize the Flash drive without the driver installed? I thought the system would automatically detect the device and a driver was not needed. Can someone out there help me with this issue? I know this is an older computer but I believe it still should recognize the Flash drive.
Thanks,

Mine is is the Memorex 1 gig model and when I plugged it in it launched right off, no drivers at all, only difference I see is that I am running 2K pro on that box..
Try it on some other computers, also the USB port you plugged into is known to work, yes?
Keep the old stuff running

It works on my other computer (XP). I purchased this computer from another source that I have not been able to contact so I do not know if the USB port works or not. Until I am able to contact the person do you have any suggestions?

If your computer is an older model it may not support USB 2. I think there are issues with some flash hardware working under USB 1.1. To check to see what you do have in the way of USB controllers look at Device Manager for Enhanced USB contoller. Some older MBoards had both USB1.1 and USB controllers. Some of your USB ports may be only 1.1 & some 2.0.
If you are unsure if the USB ports work check in device manager to see if they are even installed.
Aida32 or Everest can also tell you if you have Enhanced USB.

When I opened the Device Manager a yellow question mark appeared next to PCI device. Is Aida32 and Everest free software? I only have two USB ports.

Both of the mentioned programs are free software. Google for them. If there is a yellow exclamation mark that means that the device is present but not working properly. Look for a + sign in front of the listed hardware. Click on the plus sign to expand that catagory. You may need to install Motherboard Chipset drivers and USB drivers. If you don't know what the make and model of your MBoard is Google for one of the mentioned programs, download and install it. Under motherboard you should find a model name and number. You could simply try removing the device with the exclamation mark and rebooting. Windows will attempt to reinstall the device but if no drivers are found the device won't be properly installed. If that happens you will need to get the proper software drivers for the hardware.

I have the proper drivers for the Flash drive but Windows releases a message saying I do not have to install the drivers. Are you telling me this is a motherboard issue and I need to find out the name of my motherboard? Will the two softwares you mentioned help solve my issue?

The drivers I am talking about are the drivers for the USB controllers, not the device itself. Do you have any USB devices listed in Device Manager?
You stated you had an exclamation mark by a PCI device. Did you attempt to expand that listing as I described. Without doing that we are in the dark as to what device isn't working correctly.
The Motherboard chipset drivers contain files necessary for the proper performance of the onboard hardware, which probably includes the USB ports. Are the USB ports up at the top of your case by the mouse, KBoard, etc. or down lower in an expansion slot? This could help determine if your USB is onboard or an add in card. Both Aida32 & Everest are utilities that help identify hardware. Simply copy and paste this entire address into your address box in Internet explorer. Download Aida32 here: http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/...

For mine I need only drivers for the USB PORT not the stick itself as both 2K and XP see it right away, BTW my 1 gig stick is USB2.
