I feel pretty stupid for not being able to make this work, but I am stumped.

Scenario: peer-to-peer network with Win9x and Win2K PCs. No domains, just workgroups. All PCs have Windows File/Print sharing enabled over TCP/IP networking.

PC1 - Has Win2K. Directly connected to printer that multiple users want to print to and also some files that need to be shared. Users that will access PC1 have both Win9x and Win2K PCs.

PC2 - Existing Win2K PC that has same needs as PC1. This one is working fine with file and printer sharing working great.

Problem: As administrator, I share out printer and files. Under permissions I allow "Everyone" for both. I also select "Everyone" under the Security tab. Versus creating individual user accounts on PC1, I enable the Guest account. I assume this will fall under "Everyone" and allow anyone who connects to the PC to access the shares and the printer. Wrong. Both Win9x and Win2K PCs return a "Access Denied" message. I find this strange because PC2 is configured the exact same way and I can access all the file shares and printers on that PC from any PC on the network, with any username/password. PC2 doesn't have any user accounts on it besides the main user. Only the Guest account is enabled with "Everyone" given rights to what needs to be shared. And it works great. So why not on PC1?

I also found it strange that when trying to access PC1 with a Win2K PC, it doesn't give me the prompt telling me "Incorrect password or unknown username" and then asks for my username and password. It just says "Access Denied".

To me, sharing a few printers and files between Win9x and Win2K PCs seemed like an easy concept. Am I missing a step somewhere?

Bob - lol. yes it is. Printer and files are shared out with permissions set to "Everyone". Security is also set to "Everyone". I have problems seeing either (printer and files) When I go to Network neighborhood or My Network Places and find the computer (PC1) and click on it, it says "Access Denied". I can't even see what is being shared.

You have to have a user name on the machine with the shares corresponding with the user name logged in on the machines accessing the shares. It sounds like the host is not allowing access because the user is unknown.

Example:
win98 machine x login: client1
win2k machine 1 login: client2
win2k machine 2 users: client1
client2

Hope this helps.
