I had the same trouble awhile back. Make sure when you choose the file to attach that you click on the arrow on the Insert button and insert it as an attachment. Now I just doubleclick the file and it inserts it as an attachment itself. Send a couple small files to yourself until you find what works consistently.
If this is an actual bug or not I do not know, maybe someone else does and can be more help.

Check your default e-mail format is not RTF.

'tools /options / e-mail format'

Some people's e-mail servers cannot handle rich text format correctly (JUNO, AOL, etc.); for them, you must send the e-mail with attachments as "plain text" (choose "Format" in the menu bar, then "Plain Text"). I send e-mails containing attachments as "rich text" or "plain text", depending on the person (i.e., e-mail server) to whom it is going (despite what LudoB says in his message). If you send it wrong, the receiving person's e-mail will make reference to "winmail.dat", and no attachment will be available. If you don't want the hassle, though, just send everything as plain text. I hope this helps.

I can send e-mails with just a message but I can't send a message with an attachment. What settings should I check to see if I have set something up wrong?
