Iwent to reformat my HD that has Windows 2000 Pro on it. I used the format option on my other computer (running Win xp pro) I checked the box where it said 'Create a MS-DOS startup disk'. After fomatting the 3 1/2 floppy, I extracted the boot98.exe on it successfully. I put the disk in the computer running Win2000pro. Loaded it up in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I went to A: drive, typed FDISK. and it said Wrong version of MS Dos. Can anyone help me here?? Or tell me what I did wrong?

There is no M$DOS in the NT Family - NT4, W2K, XP, W2K3 - CD's / boot diskette set all have the tools built in to Format drive.

"YOU DO NOT NEED M$DOS"

Then what do I do to reformat the HD on the Win2000pro system? It is full of Trojans and viruses and it won't let me do anything but load up in safe mode and then after a few minutes it cuts off power and reboots. (It is my buddies computer as I would not let this happen to my machine) He tried to put a Fireball Firewall on it and basically messed it up even more. I can't even change anything in BIOS. It has locked me out of that as well. I can only View BIOS not change anything. Prett screwy huh?

WRONG... we'll wrong about DOS anyways... I hate Micro$oft and I wish I could kill Mr. Gates for removing DOS... It was the only good OS they ever published. There are so many things you can't do in windows 2k and xp because it has no dos. And to answer the question is because your fdisk command is windows 98's. However, you are probably (I'm assuming since you use windows 2k) using NTFS rather than FAT32. Windows 98 is just confused by NTFS. That's why I hate NTFS. So basically, Windows 98 boot disks are useless with 2000 unless you are using FAT32.

Oh, yea... and to the question about formatting your hard drive. You can format it by booting to the Win2k install disk and it should give you the option to format before installing... (well any os installation will format a drive for you... Some like DOS will do it without asking). My suggestion is if you have a copy of Linux, use it to partition and format your drive.

Yes the HD is formatted to NTFS. I tried to install a few months ago on this same computer. A 'Clean' Install as they say. But, It still had some of the directories and files left over from the previous settings that were corrupt. Can I use the Win200pro bootdisks to do this or do I actually need the disk? Because the win2000pro cd is slighly dammaged now and we want to install win xp pro now which I have and is ready to go.

Boot to the Windows XP cd and install. During the installation you will be given a chance to Remove Partitions, Create Partitions, and Format... just like the Windows 2k cd. In fact, I don't think those pages of the installation have changed at all from 2k to xp.

Every time that I need to reformat my hard drives that are converted to the NTFS file system I usually use my Windows 98 CD and
boot from the CD option, as well as "Start the computer with CDROM support". It will go through the process of loading all of its drivers and such and then will leave you with a command prompt. Type FDISK and choose
option 3, this will take you to another screen asking you which partition that you
want to delete. Choose I think it's option
4 "Delete Non-Dos partition". Scroll to the drive that you want to reformat and delete the partition. Good Luck... Hope one of these many suggestions posted on this site works for you. Btw. Sometimes in order to reset the Bios because of forgotten passwords or whatever reason it may be necessary to pull the battery in order to reset the Bios. BTW...Remember to ground yourself on the chasis before touching the motherboard.

Than you all ofr those who have helped... The computer has to be put under for 20 minutes then revived. I pulled the battery out to reset the BIOS settings(i.e. password that had me locked out I became aware of) After putting the battery back in. I started her up and began to uninstall programs. I also noticed that someone had deleted MSCONFIG! Yes thats right.. whoever got into his computer thrashed it. The menu that I get for the Add/Remove Programs is not working by saying some class isn;t registered and then giving me an error saying there are no programs installed, but still gives me the list but no option to actually uninstall them.

In Conclusion.. I reformatted and used the winxp bootdisks.. which worked.. then Booted to my CDROM for the startup install of XP PRO.. then it said that one of my .CAB files were missing and that it coudn't swap file or something. So now I am trying to obtain a XP disk in the meantime. Other than that problem solved. Thank you everyone for your quick comments.
