Comment: When I go to the DOS prompt or Command prompt in Win 2000, and type fdisk, I get the following message "fdisk is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems to me that fdisk is not a recognised in 2000, where as in 98 it is. So what command to I need to use to partition my HDD.

Reply: (edit)hah :D johan did you try it with a 98 boot disk? FDISK should run from there. Now as for formatting, I've had no luck formatting a hdd with win2000, be it the file system or something else. Are you attempting to reinstall a clean copy of windows 2000? If you are, I would suggest installing from windows 2000 setup disks (which can be made on any machine running 2000), because it will allow you to format your drive. Installing from a CD will not. One more question, have you thought about using Partition Magic to partition your drives? Excellent program ;)

Reply: (edit)Many thanks for your replies. Ok I have formatted my HDD with 2000. This was done by using my Win 98 startup disk and worked like a swiss watch, surprisingly a 98 startup disk allowed a HDD with 2000 to be formatted. When I re-installed 2000 I changed my boot sequence in my CMOS to "boot from cd-rom", then restarted the machine and it installed from the CD. No I have not trying booting from my 98 startup disk and running Fdisk from there. Yes partition magic is a great program I have heard, but don't have it. Oh by the way does anyone know how to create a Win 2000 boot/startup disk. I think this is the one that takes up 4 floppies and it had to made through the 2000 CD under make boot 32

Reply: (edit)The four floppies are for STARTING THE INSTALLATION, not the troubleshooting startup disks you want. I can't remember the specifics of going about creating a startup disk right now (LONG day) so I'll give you the general info.... You should be able to create a FAT partiioned startup disk similar to the Win98 disks, but for NTFS you just need to copy over 4 or 5 files to a disk...
