I noticed recently that my computer had been slowing down for some reason. When I looked at my Task Manager, I realized I always had an extra instance of IEXPLORE.exe running. It appears automatically after I reboot my computer as well. When I actually open up a the browser, I get two instances of IEXPLORE.exe. Is this normal? I'm not exactly sure if the IEXPLORE.exe task is supposed to always be running, even when you don't have a browser up and running.

IEXPLORER.EXE is not supposed to be running all the time. Maybe there's a software running that uses iexplorer.exe or smtng. Refer to topic "how? I stop active audio media player" - alireza hejazi - 01:12:31 7/29/02 for possible problem solution.

Thanks for the response! I'm not sure exactly what you are suggesting that I do from the thread you referred me to.
How can I check which app is using the IEXPLORE.exe task? Also, it seems that this 'extra' IEXPLORE.exe task constantly takes up quite a bit of memory, which is why it is concerning me so much. There have also been a couple of instances where I get pop-up ads even right as I finish rebooting the system and I haven't even launched a browser yet.
Again, thanks for the help!

You can try to check which soft is starting IEXPLORER.exe buy removing startup items (one per each reboot) and reboot the computer. So on every boot one soft will not bee loaded and if the IEXPLORER.exe don't start then the removed startup item was guilty :)
I hope you get it.

Do you have a current version of an anti virus program, sounds like a virus or back door trojan is running.

I also encounter this problem.
This application is actually a trojan horse, attacking your PC by POP-up adver.
My AVG anti-virus software detect it under: c:\windows\system32\iexplore.exe
My AVD try to del it, but it can't.
Can anyone reply any free software to elminate Trojan horse.
