Explorer.exe won't load

When I try to upgrade Win2K to Service Pack 1, after the installation Windows loads without explorer.exe. That is, a blank screen -- no GUI. I try to execute explorer.exe from the task manager's "start new process" dialogue, but it still won't load. Uninstalling SP1 solves the problem.
This also happens when I try to upgrade to IE5.5. I would be eternally grateful for any help you can offer. The whole point of getting SP1 was to make my system more reliable, but installing it causes the whole thing to stop. Please help.

I think u messed it up somewhere when upgrading to win2k because I did that, then after I reinstalled video drivers, guess what, computer never loaded windows again. So what did I do? Formatted the HD under fat32 and installed 2000 over again. Give it a shot, but back up your stuff first. g/l

AHH! That's not much of a suggestion ;-)
Since reporting this problem, the same thing happened when trying to install Media Player 7. No GUI. Uninstalling Media Player in safe mode solved the problem. So, it seems that I can't install any Microsoft products.
Any suggestions on how to back stuff up so the restoration is as easy as possible? Can I back up software as well as personal files?
