After installing Windows 2000 over Windows 98 SE everything works fine except for the file or folder search function. When I click on Start, Search, For Files or Folders... , the search windows opens and after a few seconds an error window opens that states:
"explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows."
"You will need to restart programs"Anybody has a solution this problem?

Ie 6.0
Ialso found this but i don't know what to do:
SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade a computer that is using a shell (interface) other than Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe), the shell is changed back to Windows Explorer.CAUSE
During the upgrade process, Windows 2000 Setup changes the shell setting back to the default because the majority of the interface for Windows 2000 is available only by using Windows Explorer.RESOLUTION
WARNING : If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.If you want to use a different shell, modify the following registry key with a string value containing the appropriate executable file:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Shell

Take a look at this kb here; http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q255758
Can also be hardware conflicts or since you did not do a clean install and upgraded over Win98SE if Norton CleanSweep was installed on Win98Se then this could cause this problem. You may also want to try reinstalling Internet Explorer or run a repair in the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. Viruses sometimes also generate this error. In any event IE appears to have been compromised or has been made corrupt.

I forgot to mention that you should make sure that you have Windows2000 Service Pack 2 installed also or you may want to place a fresh copy of explorer.exe into the C:\WINNT directory from C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386 to see if that will help.

explorer.exe has got nothing to do with Internet Explorer. It does not matter which version of IE do u have installed. what i would suggest is perform a repair using ur W2K installtion CD. that should help. the suggestion of the service pack is also good, but i would suggest that u install it after the repair.

Sorry Manish,
but because of cross referenced registry keys, shared functions and the fact that IE is just another program using the explorer shell {among other things) Internet Explorer DOES have plenty to do with Windows Explorer.Tom-
Per Microsoft, this issue can come up if you are running IE6 and there is a program or a service installed on your computer that is incompatible with it. They suggest that you revert back to the previous version of IE. To do that:1.Open Add/Remove Programs
2.Highlight Internet Explorer 6
3.Click Change/Remove
4.Click Restore the earlier Windows configuration
5.Click OK
6.Click Yes when you are prompted to remove Internet Explorer
7.Restart the computerAfter reboot try a Search to verify that the error no longer comes up
Download the lates security updates for your restored version of IE

You may also want to verify that the following registry key has the appropriate 'Data' entry of 'Explorer.exe' and if you modify it you will need to reboot for it to take effect:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Shell"Btw Manish:
Whenever I try accessing your website I get the following error message;
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access/on this server.
Apache/1.3.12 Server at www.creativeiways.com Port 80"

I also checked
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Shell"
and it has explorer.exe in it.

Explorer.exe is the correct Shell Data entry. You may want to take a look at what the detailed event log error message is showing in; Start>Settings>ControlPanel>AdministrativeTools>EventViewer>SystemsLog and/or ApplicationLog?
