Comment: A few months ago, I reinstalled Windows 2000 Pro on a Dell Dimension XPS-B733R PC with 256MB RAM. Recently, I've noticed that when I double-click on a desktop icon like My Computer or Network Neighborhood, I quickly get a Windows message box stating that the application has caused an error in Explorer.exe and will shut down. The desktop goes blank and then the icons reappear. If I do it again, it opens up just fine. I can duplicate the error every single time. I cannot find any Knowledge Base articles on the error and was hoping someone might have had a similiar experience and can pass along a fix.

Reply: (edit)well for this error the only real fix is to reinstall windows again. Sooner rather than later as it will only get worse to the point where windows will no longer boot. basically this means that some of the core windows files are corrupt and need to be replaced. :)

Reply: (edit)I had a similar problem when sometimes using Explorer to view a folder's contents it would crash saying the memory at location nnnnnnnn could not be read etc. There are a couple of mentions of problems like this in the KB. I would get service packs 1 & 2 applied and see what effect that has before reinstalling the whole shebang. Also. apply all the other fixes available at windowsupdate.

Reply: (edit)Barry, I work in a computer lab and have been installing win2000 and also upgrading from win98 to winn2000. All of the computers that I have put a clean install on work fine, but the computers that I upgraded give me the same explore.exe error message. I have tried to fix it with win2000 patch but, to no avail. How annoying is that! still searching.

Reply: (edit)This has also happened after a full re-install, followed by FDISK - FORMAT - Reinstall, and again after replacing the hard drive....... I doubt re-installing will be much of a fix - it looks like typical MS crap software.
