error: The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

explorer.exe is what controls the browsing function of your hard disk. ie ' windows explorer'

anyone know what is causing this crash?

I read through the same topic posted many times but as of yet no one has seemed to pin point the issue, but rather: reinstall windows try service pack 2 etc,.

well iv'e done both and doesn't seem to fix it. I do'nt think its a software issue but i don't know anyone have any positive answers?
thanks.

Explorer.exe messages can be caused by about 3 million different things.
Poke around in your Event Viewer and Device Manager and see if anything shows up weird.
If nothing shows up you might try powering off the machine, unplugging it and reseating all the cards and anything else in the case. Something may not be fully in and thus causing some weird things to happen.

Also, might try a new post with exactly WHEN the error is happening and a little info on your system (dual boot? processor? ram? logging in as Admin?).....

I have this same problem. It started when I installed iMesh. It seems that this app installs a plugin called now.net. This seems to not agree with the explorer shell and thats what causes the crash. There are a few apps on the net that have this plugin (GoZilla and others) Search Microsoft for "iMesh" and you will find some more info. I tried the repair options that they have offered and nothing worked. I am still looking for a way to fix this because my pc is really stuffed.

If anyone finds a fix please post. T

Thaks and good luck.

I have been having the same problem. I have win2kpro and have had the problem with ie5, 5.5 and 6. I only get the error when I am in windows explorer in a folder with a large amount of files. The error seems to appear when the screen is refreshing or if I scroll. I have tried new video drivers and a new mouse (I know that's weird but I found that when I first clicked on a scroll bar, it would down one screen, if I then rolled the mouse over the scroll bar again it would scroll without having to hit the mouse button and then I would get the error). I did reinstall sp2 and had no luck with that. I combed through the KB and found very few references that only pointed to programs that I do not have. I do have two nic cards installed and am sharing a connection. I am using an ATI rage 128 graphics card (I did have to turn down my hardware acceleration because of this card - I would experience hangs on boot). I'm inclined to think there is a connection between the mouse and the video that is causing some sort of overflow. If anyone has any similarities in there system, I would be interested to know.
Thanks
bob

I had the same problem after installing Imesh...

I uninstalled it, killed everything in the registry that had imesh in it.. NO GO...

Hmm, this was starting to really be a pain in the (yes that).

I installed Imesh again with every default setting left alone. Rebooted, guess what? It fixed the issue!

I then removed imesh and all the other crap, and it sill works!

Hope that helps guys!
James

I think I have solved this problem and am putting down my solution here. 1st some intro: The problem in my win2k (Sp2) had gotten so bad, that I couldn't open any folder and as soon as I'd click on any folder, it'd crash the explorer. The only way I was left to navigate my folders was to launch IE and type c:\ and work from there on into othe folders.

The theory used to solve this problem is what I call "MOW". This is risky guys so try it carefully and back up u're registry before you proceed.

1) Download IE 6 or 5.5, which ever you like before hand onto your desktop, cuz you won't be able to get into no folders after doin the followin procedures. I used IE 6 though.

2) MOW (delete) every frigin entry in the registry that belongs to Internet Explorer except the references from other programs to IE. You will find IE4 entries, MOW em down too.

2) Restart and some how get into DOS mode and MOW the "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer" folder, then restart.

3) Login after the restart and run that IE 6 setup file and Install it. Restart your computer and it should solve the problem.

Let me know if anyone comes across any other less risky solution :) I still sometimes get explorer crashes, but they are very very infrequent.

If you installed iMesh and get this problem you need to do the following:
I'm assuming you can't access Control Panel to get to the Add/Remove Programs so you need to: Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Disk Cleanup.

Run it for your C drive then select More Options & Clean Up... Installed Programs. This will run Add/Remove Programs. Remove (I think it's called) new.netApplication.

If you can't access this for whatever reason you'll need to go to this link and follow the instructions for amending the registry.
http://new.chat.new.net/viewtopic.php?topic=1348&forum=8&0

Once it has been uninstalled, look in C:\WinNT and make sure you don't have a file called newdotnet3_32.dll (or anything beginning newdot*.dll).

Then you should be fine! I am!

Cheers,
Adam

I installed Gozilla on Windows 2000 and the started getting this error message. Re-installing IE or Win 2OOO SP does not solve the problem as the registry entries are obviuosly whats causing the problem. Haven't solved the problem but I can confirm that the problem is definetely caused by Gozilla (or more specifically a program called now.net which is installed at the same time). If anybody finds a way of fixing this problem without rebuilding the machine please let me know.

Many Thanks

Mike

I had the same problem related to IE and Win 2K. Specifically I was using Quick Books Pro 2001 which uses the IE web browser for its interface. Starting Quick Books would result in the shell being stopped, the desktop would disappear and then reappear. A nasty side affect was that it screwed up my HP printer software and I could not print. The first couple of times this happened I just reinstalled Quick Books (good thing I back up regularly) and the HP software and all was fine for a while. Then the problem would reoccur. Finally I just had to face reality and figure out how to prevent this from reoccuring. The steps mentioned below seem to have fixed the problem. My machine has been running peacfully now for over two weeks since I took these steps:

For Win 2000 and IE 5.5 -

1. Disabled Windows File Protection (Search for "Disable Windows File Protection" for help with this)

2. Updated to SP2 for Win 2K and IE 5.5

3. Ran Check Disk to fix any disk errors

4. Downloaded Microsoft RegClean (Just search for RegClean and you will find a download site)

5. Ran RegClean until it did not find any errors. You have to repeatedly run the application until you don't get the Fix Errors option.

I hope this helps. You may want to run RegClean periodically after you complete the above steps. Good luck!

I had a similar problem on one of my kids computers and was on the verge of reinstalling windows when I finally found the cause.

On his computer, there was a pattern to the problem. If you tried opening a windows app such as My Computer, Explorer, IE, every other attempt would be OK, the next would result in desktop icons going away for a few seconds and no window would open up. I would see in event manager the "The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted" message each time it happened.

I finally pinned down the date it started and searched the computer for all files created withing that 24 hours and found a directory c:\FTapp. I then proceeded to find on the web at http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99206& that this is a trojan, low risk advertising/user monitor. I don't know who installed it but I suspect maybe IMesh.

To get rid of it, you can try going to Add/Remove programs where there is an uninstall. If not, go into regedit and search for 'ftapp'and delete every instance where found. If it's found down a layer in a registery key, go back up to the top of that key and delete the key itself. You will now have to restart the computer and then delete the c:\FTapp directory.
