EXE FILES

Hello,

My problem is, I cannot open any EXE files. No programs I can open, no shortcuts even. But, let's say a Photoshop file that I made I try and open, that opens, cause it's a .PSD file not a .exe file...It's the weirdest thing.
I'm running Windows 2000 on a Dell 620 workstation, which also has NT and I can dual boot to either OS.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

I was on Morpheus (like napster, but you can get videos, documents, even some software) and I was looking for any media from a certain movie, the fast and furious. So I searched for whatever it came up with. I got a few videos, and one looked to be a .jpg file under morpheus, that must have been why I downloaded it, but when I looked at my downloads folder under my computer, it should it labeled as "fastandfurious.jpg.exe" and I knew that wasn't right, but I opened it, well that was stupid cause now I cannot even open any programs and can't get to the display properties from the control panel.

If anyone has had this problem or knows what about this kind of problem please let me know as soon as possible what you think it can be and if I can fix it without reformatting. I'm running Windows 2000 on a Dell 620 workstation, which also has NT and I can dual boot to either OS.

Thank you very much and I hope to hear from you soon.

I would run an anti-virus scan.

An EXE file is an Executable file, it's an extension just like PDF, JPG, GIF, DOC, etc.. It executes something, if you download something, the only time it will have the EXE extension is if it's a program.....

Right, that's why I think it's some hidden program on the computer now..

Any other ideas? I'm going to run an antivirus scan and let you know.

Thanks again

Hey,

I actually can't even open virusscan from the CD, its norton antivirus 2001. and it will not even open cause its an exe file. Now, yesterday I changed a .jpe file thinking it was a jpg file, and changed it so it would open in Photoshop, because I thought it was a Jpg file and I wanted that to open in photoshop. Well, the weirdest thing is, now when I try and open a program like internet explorer or whatever, it tries to open the program in photoshop!

So does anyone know how I can set the file types back to their defaults cause maybe that's what's up maybe whatever that program was just changed that.

Is anyone from the Midwest or Chicago area that can possibly look at this sometime? We'd be offering to pay, I just want this fixed if it can be without reformatting :)

Thanks again for all your advice,
Andrew

I would refer you to my two notes in:

http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/11074.html

see if the idea explained there can serve as a start to repair the anomaly.

To workaround the blockage of running virus scan in gui, you should get hold of and do so with one that can be run in real DOS, such as F-Prot.

Boot to the norton CD run virus scan. if that doensn't work reinstall windows and install some virus software. I know this is a year old but I thought someone should post the correct fix.
