Description:
The Vpctcom service failed to start due to the following error:
Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
A search for vpctcom turns up 3 entries
1)vpctcom.sys c:\winnt\system32\drivers
2)vpctcom.sy_ f:\mmx modem drivers\mmx w2k driver\mmx
3)vpctcom.sy_ f:\modemdrive\r8.00-9k win 2kDon't know where to start. Seems very benign, not causing any real probs.

Adrian Grigorof:
- "The system cannot find the device specified." - This error occurs when a hardware device was removed without removing the drivers as well. The service reported varies depending on the hardware.- "The service did not start due to a logon failure." - We encountered this message when a server is restarted and the password for some service accounts have been changed without updating the service properties.
- "The system cannot find the file specified." - This event may occur when a service was not uninstalled properly (not removed from the service database). The Service Control Manager is trying to start the service but the executable is not there. Remove the entries for the service from the registry. This may also occur if one of the dependent files are missing or are the for the wrong OS version.
Computer Bliss: - "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." - In my case this (the Sentinel service) was caused by a device driver that required a specific hardware attached to the system. Also it could have been solved by obtaining the latest driver from the manufacturer.
Gregory R. Tellone: - "The executable program that this service is configured to run in does not implement the service." - See Q277770 for an example of conditions when such error can occur. The Microsoft Exchange POP3 service was missing from services MMC. I exported/imported all POP3Svc keys from a working server to this server.
Anonymous: This can also happen if your account does not have "Run As a Service" right.
Scott Mckenzie: Service: "Cdralw2k", error: "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."
Cause: Windows Media Player 7.0 loads an Adaptec driver for CD burners
Solution: removed file from registry
Search through the registry for cdralwzk and turned off manually
Start, Run, regedit
Edit, Find, cdralw2k
Start, Edit DWORD value [changed values to 0]
Changed files:
- oLocalMachine/System/ConrtolSet001/Service/cdralw2k
- oLocalMachine/System/ConrtolSet002/Service/cdralw2kGreg Sommers: Error: "The system cannot find the file specified." - I received this error when installing SQL Server 2000 enterprise edition on a cluster (IBM hardware). The symptoms are this: after successful install of SQL 2000 on node 1 of the cluster, node 2 fails to bring the services online thus failing them all back over to node 1. It appears this is caused by missing registry entries. A fix for this can be found at Q308010.

Thanks for the quick response, but I don't think I get the idea from your response. They seem loosely related to my problem but don't appear to have a solution.
