I recently installed Win2K on my Compaq Presario 7470, and I can't get the sound card to work for the life of me! The card is an ESS Allegro, but when I try to install the suggested driver by compaq it doesn't work! and I can't get just the driver, just the application to install it. I am going nuts! Please help!

Go to http://www.windrivers.com
click on sound card Icon and then click on the letter E in the alphabet and find the ESS manufacture and click on it. Look in the sound card drivers area or try the ESS forum.
You will need to know your model and /or chip set #

You need to get the upgrade kit from the compaq website and flash your bios. Then you can use the suggested driver.

http://www.windrivers.com doesn't have any drivers or even a sound card icon! Nothing but ads, they suck!

The driver can be found here.
Use the Allegro PCI Audio (WDM)

VIA/Trident

Hello. I also have a compaq presario. i do not want to upgrade unless i know that driver is working for an ESS (does it have to be ESS) by the way, my sound card is ESS Allegrro PCI Audio (WDM)

To Neslon:
My Compaq also has the ESS Allegro PCI Audio (PCM) and it's working fine now. I have just used the file suggested (http://help.nec-computers.com/uk/itemnr/NECFIUP04860100.asp) on my Compaq Presario 5012US. It worked beautifully. It was so easy to install.
