error message often disappears!?

hi, often when windows gives an error message (e.g file cannot be deleted because file is in use) it shows up only a milisecond. I never have the time to read the message, so often I don't know what to do different. Does anybody know what causes this and how to fix it? P.S once in a while it works like it should; it appears, I read it, and click OK to close the message
