Hi,
I'm trying to run the old DOS game Frontier II on my new Amd machine. The computer uses Win2k Professional, and at first I had some problems getting hold of a version of DOS to use. I finally settled on Freedos, which boots OK from startup.
The problem is that I don't have enough expanded memory for the game. Following a number of online tips, my config.sys file now looks like this:
DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO
DEVICE=A:HIMEM.SYS
FILES=20
BUFFERS=20
rem screen=0x12
SHELL=A:\COMMAND.COM /E:512 /MSG /P
DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO
DEVICE=A:HIMEM.SYS
FILES=20
BUFFERS=20
rem screen=0x12
SHELL=A:\COMMAND.COM /E:512 /MSG /PI have also heard of a tip to use Devicehigh=emm386.exe, but I can't seem to find this file anywhere on my computer. I've done a search on all the disks and there isn't anything that looks even remotely like it. Does Win2k not ship with this file?
Most of the memory freeing tips I've seen require some tweak to the parameters fed to emm386, but since I don't have this file it's very difficult to proceed.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, first of all EMM386.exe is an expanded memory driver and it was developed in the 80's. (!!!)
I believe it was discontinued with the end of Win98SE.
If you need it, search for the MS-DOS 6.22 disks if you have 'em or download them.You could also download EMM386.exe directly on the net, I'd reccomend http://computers.lycos.com and there is a little box on the bottom, where you can search for software. Maybe this is illegal, if you don't have the proper license, but who cares.
And maybe you're also interested how to use it:
In your config.sys enter the following:
DEVICE={PATH}EMM386.EXE NOEMS HIGHSCAN
if you need extended memory only
or
DEVICE={PATH}EMM386.EXE AUTO RAM
for expanded memory.Hope this will help you,
bye
