I had windows 2000 pro and then installed XP. it gave me the option of duel booting with XP as default.
Then one day i had the same error message as kpaul i re-installed windows 2000 and now i cant get into XP the default duel boot is now windows 2000 when i do click on XP from duel boot i get a message saying:
Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMdit then goes on to say:
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows 2000
setup using the original setup floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.i dont understand coz i selected XP from duel boot, why would it come up with this error message??
Can anyone please help me get back to XP....
Thankyou in advanceJeffers

XPis the newer OS so W2K would not recognise it.You will have to boot with XP cd and select repair either the boot (if it is still an option)or a previous installation of XP.XP would then set up the dual boot menu.

The reason is that XP was made after 2000.
which means that XP's files are newer that 2000. To fix the problem...........boot up in windows 2000. Copy NTLDR and ntdetect.com from the XP cd and put them into the windows 2000 root directory e.g C:\ or D:\ overwrite the two that already exist (back them up just incase)....
AND WALLA Dual boot works !!!P.S shovel204 does not know what he is talking about !

Roger is the man. Yes this worke for me by copying a newer version of NTLDR from Cd to Root directory. Thanks very much

YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been searching all over the internet because i installed WIN 2000 Pro and I could not boot into WinXP but those files did it!!!
Can I just blow away WIN2K now??
AGAIN YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!!
