Is there a way to use Win2K's bootloader instead of LILO to boot between Windows and linux on the same machine? I like LILO and all, but I'm partial to the Win2k loader.

yes there is

Use ntldr instead of lilo. But you must install lilo in its partition first (not MBR)
I assume NT on /dev/hda1 and linux on /dev/hda2 (linux convention, just an example)

1) on linux : dd if=/dev/hda2 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
2) copy that bootsect.lnx to somewhere (either dos floppy or dos partition)
3)on NT : edit c:\boot.ini and put this line
c:\point\to\bootsect.lnx="Linux"
(remember that bootsect.lnx part hah...)

reboot

Then you will notice "Linux" menu appear on nt loader

well... you should read NT+LINUX HOWTO
www.winimage.com has a utility call "Bootpart" which can ease this task

good luck

Unfortunately, I installed Win2K Professional before Linux. Is there a way, short of reintalling Win2K, that I can use the Windows boot loader? (I would use Linux exclusively, but have software that only runs in Windows.)

yo, G. check out what Sky Wizard wrote, above. you have to install Win2k before Linux in order for the dual boot process to work correctly. you will have to create a new partition for linux however...

I gots a more serious problem that left me scratchin my head ----

First off, I installed Corel Linux 1.1 on top of windows 98 on a PII400 machine on a single, partitioned hard disk. Works fine -

Then I decided to play with my other pc - I already had win2k - then I added another hard disk, partitioned into 2 seperate drives, and installed win98 on 1 of them. Worked fine - K, then I decided to install corel linux on the other partition. HAhaha, when I rebooted, I got:

010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010101010110 (You get the point) EVER AND OVER scrolling down the screen.... I though I broke something, so I played with it for hours.... Re-installed linux, couldnt fix it. I have to use recovery console to FIXMBR and FIXBOOT to boot win2k - in the process, it wiped out the bootsector so I can no longer boot win9x --- RRRRRRRR , and when I try to boot linux from the other drive (By setting CMOS boot sequence) it gives me 010101010101010101 blah blah.... ???????What the hell did I do ??? I am pretty new to linux, but know winnt and 9x very well, so some DETAILED information would be GREATLY appriciated ! Thanks !

you changed /etc/lilo.conf
so
take the compressed boot and/or LBA addressing out of it

I have had Win2k and RedHat 7 running for months on the same machine using LILO as my boot loader. I chose to stick with FAT32 on my Win2k drive so that seeing that drive from RedHat would be easier. That said, if you are using NTFS under Win2k I don't know if the rest of my story will help you.
I have seperate drives, but the same should hold true for a partitioned drive. Install Win2k on your first drive/partition using FAT32. Install Linux next. I don't know about COREL, but the RedHat install recognizes the existence of Win2k (DOS) and gives you the option of installing LILO to the MBR (Master Boot Record) of your primary drive or to the drive/partition where Linux is installed. I choose MBR and then you get to choose which OS will boot by default. I pick Win2k for my wife's sake.
The above works fine when you have one partitioned drive or two drives of the same type (IDE or SCSI.) The real fun begins when you can't afford a $400 36GB SCSI drive so you run down to Fry's and buy a $109 30GB IDE drive (or vice versa.) Now LILO doesn't understand the BIOS addresses of the drive locations and when LILO installs you reboot to LI or LIL- or whatever.
If you Linux install gives you the option of creating a boot disk I highly recommend doing so. The RedHat boot disk gets me back in to full operation if something goes wrong with LILO. I had Win2k on the first SCSI drive and RedHat 7 on the other. I tried Ghosting Win2k to the new IDE drive and that didn't work right. I tried using XOSL (a nice boot loader available at http://www.xosl.org ) to manage my boot process, but by this time I had already screwed up my system. I ended up searching for a soltion and found some here on this site as well as in other places. I am at work right now, but I will return here this evening and copy mu LILO config file (/etc/lilo.conf) to this page so you can see how LILO has to be tricked when using two different types of drives.
I, too, have experienced the scrolling screen of 01 01 01 01....infinity. I usually only get this when a program installed under Win2k says I need to reboot. I reboot and get the scrolling screen of garbage. I have to power my machine completely off and turn it back on for this to go away.

Here is a copy of my lilo.conf file found in
the /etc folder:

boot = /dev/hda
timeout = 50
linear
prompt
message = /boot/message
default = win2k
vga = normal
read-only
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
disk=/dev/sda
bios=0x81
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22smp
label = linux
initrd = /boot/initrd-2.2.16-22smp.img
root = /dev/sda5
image = /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
label = linux-up
initrd = /boot/initrd-2.2.16-22.img
root = /dev/sda5
other = /dev/hda1
label = win2k
table = /dev/hda

My BIOS is set to boot from my IDE hard
drive. My CD-ROM is the secondary master IDE
drive. Windows 2000 is installed on the IDE
hard drive and RedHat 7 is on the first SCSI
drive /dev/sda and /dev/sdb is my second
Linux drive. Notice the bios=0x81 line.
This tells the LILO booter to know how to
find the drives.

When I install windows 2000 pro. I could not find any files named ntldr.exe neither boot.ini nor bootsect.dos inside windows 2000 pro. However it has a boot loader itself and find windows 98 in the hard disk which was previously installed, but cannot find Linux7.0 which was also previously installed. I know we can change boot.ini under the drive which windows 98 installed,
but there is no such file, not even the file ntldr.exe which SkyWizard mentioned.
I try to search if there is any file called ntldr.exe by searching in the windows 2000 pro. drive, but still no such file.

Can any one find out where and what is the new name of the windows 2000 pro boot loader?
