I have a pre-configured system with win2k on it, thing is I fell for the Creative DXR3 scam and now have this DVD tv output board that dont work. I have set aside a partition for 98 just want to know if anyone has tried this before, any ideas or inspiration appreciated.
Thanks

Is there no new driver for Creative DXR3 that works in win 2000? I'm unfamiliar with the product. If you want to do a dual boot, you need to install w98 first and then 2000, if you install 2000 first then you need software like powerquest boot magic to set up the dual boot.

Either OS can be present first (it's just a little easier if '98 is first) - as long as you do not have W2K as ntfs in the c: partition and want to add '98...

As long as your W2K c: (active Primary) partition = fat32, then it's quite straightforward to add '98 and thus establish a dual-boot.

Just run '98 set up as normal (CD boot, or '98 boot-disk etc.) and point it to install to the (fat32) partiton you have created for it. This partition will be a logical-drive??? If by chance it is a Primary partition, then it must start before 8Gigs physically into the drive; otherwise '98 won't boot - if even install...

Presuming '98 in going into a logical-drive, it will install its boot/startup files into the W2K C: (primary) partition; it will also disable the W2K mbr (it will overwrite it); you will now be able to boot to '98 only.

No panics... All you do is run the W2K repair routine and restore the W2K bootsect (mbr); this is done via a standard W2K CD (or floppies) boot.

Details on how:

http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q293401 (refers to ME but applies equally to '98)

http://is-it-true.org/nt/nt2000/atips/atips71.shtml

And if you want to understand (a little more) the how/why of dual-boot ('9x/W2K) have a read of post-21665 (#5) on this W2K forum. It covers 'most' angles; including having an OS already installed and adding the second; usually it's 98 present and adding W2K, but it can go either way... Also single/dual-drives option.

You can use add-in utils (PM/System Commander etc.) but unless you have an ntfs c: partition, there is no need...
