Hey everyone, I searched the archives and couldn't find my exact problem so here goes. I have 98se on my 7 gig drive and I want to install a 20 gig drive with win2k pro. I would like to have a dual boot system, so that when turned on I get the usual multi boot screen asking me which I want to boot up with. My question is what do I need to do to the drives to make this happen, i.e. which do I make the master and which do I make the slave? If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your time, Mike

What i did is, i just booted into 98 se, stuck the win2k cd in and clicked install, it automatically told me i couldnt upgrade 98 and that it needed to be a clean install. Eventually it will let you pick the location for win2k. Thats when i select the second drive, the slave.

Hope that helps.

I would install the windows 2000 on the 7 gig drive withthe windows 98.

I would keep the 2000 in fat 32.

Then i would use the disk manager to copy the whole 7gig HD to the 20 gig and then i would do something else with the 7 gig.

They will dual boot on the same drive.

if you want a true multi boot system then make sure your new drive is being picked up by your bios as your d drive then go into windows and install from there a clean install of windows 2000 onto your number 01 drive (00 is your c:drive)....you then can choose to convert to ntfs and still have 98...if your bios is not finding your new drive as your d drive then change the jumpers around on the back near where you connect the ribbon cable...look on your drive it might tell you which pins to put the black jumper on the get the right config...

Problem is you boot strap code can't see your boot sector on D drive on which 2000 is.
To make this happen you need to install win2000 after you plug second hDD.
Installation creates information in the partition table about your bootsector info of the win2000 disk.

you can even install win2000 win98 on the same hdd as long as they are installed on different partition and dual boot.
I have win2000pro win2000server win98 on same HDD running side by side.

Woooooooooooohhhh you guys are probobly going way over buddies head ......

Listen bud, here is an easy way to do it.

First, get a drive image program, such as ghost disk or something. Install both drives and image your 7 gig to the new one. The new one is FASTER and will make you happier have ing a large C drive. Trust me.

Now, fire up win2k setup with the setup disks, or boot from the CD.

Select new install, CREATE PARTITION, tell it where to create it, blah blah, make a partition on your C drive for 2k, make is FAT32 so they are compatable. Install 2k. Now 2k will boot when you start the PC. To get to 98, when the OS choice menu is displayed, select Windows 98. It cant get easier. PS, put the other drive in and format it now.. Use the 7 gig for backup or somthing, but use the large drive for all your important stuff.

Make it easier - get System Commander and boot off either drive.
