I have dual boot operating system 98/2000. OS 98' won't work at all. So, I keep working on win2000. I try so many ways to run the boot.ini but still couldn't locate it. I already unchecked the hide file extensions and clear hide protected operating system files. Please guide me more ways....thanks a lot.

I'm just a begginer. Could you guide me how to convert win98 to NTFS. I'm confused to do it because I got a dual boot. Your detailed explanation is highly appreciated. Thanks

Marilyn,
You have dual-boot '98/W2K and want to lose '98?
If both are in same parition (not ideal but it does work...) then simply:
set default OS to boot to W2K (My Computer\Properties\startup/shutdown tab);
retain time to boot to at least 10secs. (perhaps even the default 30sec.);
boot to W2K;
via W2K Explorer, locate/delete the '98 folder from the partition;
locate and edit the boot.ini to remove the (usually single line) reference to '98 - typically it's c\:windows, and save the changes.Reboot system; confirm W2K is OK.
Renew W2K ERD; keep safe/current.
Empty Recycle-bin and defrag drive - to tidy up the scene...
You can also delete the '98 boot/startup files if you wish; but as they take so little space - hardly worth the effort...?
Job done.
If each OS in its own partition/logical-drive it's basically the same routine. BUT do not reformat C: partition if this is were '98 presently resides (with W2K elsewhere). If you reformat C: you will lose access to any the OS (e.g W2K - which might be elsewhere...) - until you do some creative/basic repair work.
If in doubt about following the above suggestions - post back with details of drive partitions (fomrats) and what OS is where.

I salute you guys... I got all the steps. But my problem is... I still could find the boot.ini. Is there any other name of boot.ini? I found lots of .ini extension except boot. Thanks..

Took me a little while to find it on my multi-boot system; had forgotten it's hidden in a rather devious way...
To find it - or more correctly enable viewing/access...
Open W2K Explorer; go - Tools\Folder-Options\View:
'Uncheck' the button that 'says': "hide protected operating system files (recommended)"; also 'check' "the show hidden files and folders button".
The file (and all other system files) will (should) now be viewable in the C: root.
Locate (via Explorer) the boot.ini file; right-click on it and open Properties; uncheck the read-only/hidden attributes (boxes) if they are checked to restrict access/changes. Click OK and you can now open the file (C: root in Explorer) for editing by double-clicking on it. It will open into Notepad. Edit and save changes.
Reset attributes to read-only/hidden; reset the "hide protected operating system files" to hide them again (uncheck the button).
Job done...?

trvlr: I salute you for the expert instructions you've given this novice lady. I went through the same thing about 4 months ago and all worked well. Your directions are absolutly correct! :-)
Marilyn: just follow/print out what trvlr and you will not have any problems.

Thank you Pat G for the compliment...:)
Quite M$ decided to hide it that way in W2K is??? They didn't in the earlier versions (NT3x/4x...).
