I have a dual boot Windows 2000 hard drive and a single boot Windows 2000 hard drive that usually are not in my laptop at the same time. However, a few days ago I booted to my dual boot hard drive - specifically to the 'D' drive on the dual boot hard drive. Because to the presence of the second hard drive and second 'C' partition, Windows internally changed the dual boot's 'D' drive to an F drive.
I am able to boot up to the second partition of the dual boot drive but I cannot login.
What system tools do I use to have Windows disk system think that the second partition of the dual boot drive is D?
Note that I did boot to a Windows 2000 CD and entered the Recovery console. The recovery consile is what notified me that I cad a C and F partition on the HD. I am not sure what to do while I am in here. FixMBR and Fixboot commands when logged into the second Windows instance in the Recovery console did not fix the problem. Could be operator error since I have not used the console before.
Any ideas?

Clarification:
I am able to boot up to the second Windows instance on the dual boot drive and the login screen is presented, but when I attempt to login, the credential are accpted, and the message"Saving settings..." appears and the login screen comes right back. Also, not that I had very recently imaged the 'D' drive; restoring that image has no effect here.

HOW TO: Restore the System/Boot Drive Letter in Windows
This lists five possible solutions. It sounds like you've already tried number 5, maybe one of the other four will help.
