Long story short. I took both my h/d's over to a freind computer it messed them up and we recovered them. now when I try to go to my 98 h/d it gives me an invalid i/o error. I can still boot to my win 2000 adv server machine though. any suggestions?

In the long history of bad ideas swapping drives between machines with no intention of formatting them is up there. Unless your machine and his are identical you have probably damaged or destroyed the LBA scheme employed to translate drives over 1 GB to useable drives. You can try using the repair disk if you have one. If not, reformat and re-install and never take those drives out again.

create a bootable disk copy fdisk.exe in it. boot to that floppy disk . run fdisk. if fdisk was abble to find your hard drive then format that drive and reinstall your operating system.
