CPU/Ram: Pentium 1
Model/Manufacturer: Tyan

I've got an old Tyan Tiger IV dual proc mboard. C: is a 6Gb FAT32 drive. There are 4 SCSI drives attached to an Adaptec controller. I am trying to install Partition Commander v3.51 to format the SCSI drives. This program has never failed to install on 98/ME machines, and still does so. But each time I boot up on a W98 floppy to DOS (which also works fine on another box) and try to run setup for Partition Commander, the drive is accessed and then stops and returns to the command prompt. I used the regular format command to format one drive (FAT32), and it worked fine. Slowly, but fine. Why won't this program install? It makes no sense to me. The floppy drive is fine.

The only other weird thing is that DOS will not see all the SCSI drives, although W2K does and can access them all.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Are they NTFS or not because without special utilitys windows 98 cannot see ntfs drives since it is not desgined to not can dos. So are all the drivers FAT32 or not also you will prbabley need to load drivers to see scsi drives in dos.

Download the DOS ASPI drivers from adaptec to load at boot.

amd: The drives are not yet formatted. Well, now two are.

fury: The ASPI drivers are loaded at boot already. DOS can see some drives, but not others. I am going to see what FDISK sees.

I thought the problem with Partition Commander might have something to do with W2K, which is why I posted here. Does anyone have a better suggestion?

Check CONFIG.SYS on your W98 boot disk. If it's a W98 generated disk, it should have the line "LASTDRIVE=Z" included. If not, that may be the source of your problem with DOS seeing all 6 drives, as the default is I believe "E", so your DOS would only "see" the first two of the six, i.e. "D" and "E".

98/ME has a default of "Z" which may explain why you had no problem with that.

I can vaguely recall having a similar problem a few years ago, when I needed to format a large drive as FAT32 for W2K under W98 DOS, and the PC already had drives C, D and E installed.
