Hi,
I;m trying to find a way to run legacy DOS software on a new computer. I found DOSbox which is great and everything, except it does not have LPT support. It is NOT used for printing, but the software comes with a dongle lock which is attached to the LPT port.
Anyone know of a DOS Emulator with LPT support? I've searched google for about an hour and can't find anything. I really like the DOSBox control method, so something similair would be preferable.
AMD Athlon XP 1.8GHz
1GB RAM
120GB HDD SATA
GeForce 4 Ti4600 128MB
Nvidia nforce2 chipset w/ soundstorm
Pioneer DVD/RW
ABIT NF-7S Rev 2 Motherboard

Also you have posted in the WINDOWS 2000 forum, close but you state XP ????
You need to run the software from a W98SE OEM boot disk that is if you have an FAT16/32 partition on your PC, NTFS is not supported.

The spec your looking at is my HOME PC. It is not related to the one I'm working one.
And the solution you have given is kind of confusing, because I'm looking for an emulator - not partitioning/dual booting.
The software runs in conjuction with a windows based database program. At the moment we have a PC running each side by side, but I want to get it onto one PC that I know I can upgrade/fix without worry of legacy problems.

I was offering a solution on the specs and details you posted, sorry I am not a mind reader.
It is not feasible to use a DOS BASED DONGLE/SOFTWARE combination in the NT family of O/Ses due to the fact direct access of Ports is not supported. AFAIAW.
....have you looked at VirtualPC ?
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

Yeah I did look at it, but I was hoping for something I can try for free. I don't want to have to buy it to find out it isn't what I'm looking for.
With regard to DOS emulators and direct port access - DOSbox doesn't seem to have a problem with COM port access at all, so I'm sure that at least the pheasability is there. I was just hoping for one that supported LPT access.
The actual Software seems to work fine, but it obviously can't find an LPT port to check the license from the dongle

This freeware emulator supports LPT ports and more...

You have to work to put it in operation, but it is worth to try and works great under DOS and Win 9X.

Emulation access and direct access are two entirely different situations, maybe approach the Creators of DDROSSBOX and see if LPT support is feasible!

thanks I'll give it a try!
