The major difference of a domain and workgroup is where the security database is located. In a workgroup when you login to the computer,it looks for a user name and password in that particular computer. In a domain, when you login to a computer which is connected to a Domain,it will look for your username and password in the domain controller. A workgroup is a group of computers connected to each other with or without a server ,but accounts are managed locally.(in the particular computer.) A domain is a group of computers connected to a Domain controlled by the domain controller. So if you login to a W2k machine in workgroup, you have to have an account in that machine to login. In the same workgroup,if you go to another machine you will have to create an account again in that particular machine to login and so on. In a domain,if you have an account, you can login to any machine which is connected to that particular domain with out creating an account for particular computer. In simple language domain can be managed centrally and workgroup has to be managed locally. I hope this helps
