I have a word document that has hollow boxes all throughout the document. How can I open the document without the hollow boxes or how can I figure out what format it has been saved in. I tried to open it in word, notepad and office but I still get the boxes.

It sounds like the document you're opening is not a word document, or it's in a version of word that is newer than the version you are currently using. If the extension is .doc, then it could also be a WordPerfect document (even though Word should open those types of documents). If the extension is not .doc, then try and find the program associated with that particular extension (not the program windows uses to open the file, check the web to see if you can match the extension to another word processing program).
It's also a possibility that this document was created in one program, then someone opened it up in another program, which couldn't properly translate the document and put all those boxes there, then saved the document with the garbled data. You may be stuck with removing those boxes manually or with a global find/replace.
