Hello.
I have 3 Win2k Servers, SONE, STWO and STHREE. SONE is set up as the DNS server with the namespace SONE.NET. When I add the ip of SONE to the DNS list in STHREE and I ping "SONE.NET", the correct ip is resolved - that of SONE. But when I remove the ip of the DNS server (SONE) from that list and ping "SONE.NET" again, the ip of STWO appears. Could someone tell me why this is?
thank you!

"what are you talking about here then? which dns list in STHREE???? your dns list is on SONE"

When I add the ip of SONE to the list of DNS servers to use in STHREE. You know...in the "Use the Following DNS Servers" selection box in the Tcp/ip properties of the local connection.

When the ip of SONE is added to this list of DNS servers on STHREE I can ping "SONE.NET" and the ip of SONE is pinged correctly. When I remove this ip from the list of DNS servers on STHREE and ping "SONE.NET" again, the ip of STWO is returned.

ow ok got it. do you have DNS on stwo? Do you have an internet connection on STWO? I really need to know everything to solve this question it could be alot of things. can you say what kind of things are installed and how do you connect to the internet. Do you have a router etc i need to know everything. And what do you get with nslookup? ping is a netbios function nslookup is a dns function command. So do you have netbios installed on every computer? Or maybe disabled it?

I think you might be making it a bit more complicated than neccesary ooglenz. From what I understand Caeser is wondering why he can ping a server by name even without the ip of sone set as his dns server.

I am not a DNS expert but it is probably a result of the DNS entry being cached on STWO or it is getting the IP from the master browser.
