Reply: (edit)Can you ping the Windows 2000 Server from the Linux Box ? Does the linux box have an Internet valid IP or is it a private, non routeable IP ? I'm not to sure how you've got the 2000 machine setup. Is it DHCP and acting as a Router with NAT ? Any machine can use it as a DNS server, but they need a Gateway to reach it if there on different Networks...

Reply: (edit)I'm having the same problem. Since the W2k DHCP server only recognises netbios names, the same question reworded is how do you give a linux box a netbios name?

Reply: (edit)DNS is not netbios but it can be requested to query the wins server which is netbios related. But this is not the real issue. W2KS DNS will not update host records in the DNS unless it is done from a W2KS DHCP and the DHCP has to be configured to do so. Further to this every host (linux PC, unix machine) has to get its IP address dynamically. Its called Dynamic DNS update. What all this means. You should add a host record in the DNS for the IP address of the Linux box. Add what other Host entries in DNS that you want to ping. Hope this helps. This is a big area to get into. DNS is not normally dynamic in W2ks
