I have AD running on my corporate LAN and I'm having a serious issue with extremely slow logins on all of the workstations. I believe it's a DNS problem and I hope someone can help me out.

My ISP's DNS servers are entered into each workstation. The logins to the network are terribly slow, taking ten minutes or more. I believe the workstations are going out through the Internet seeking login authintication, instead of going directly to the domain controller.

Should I use the DNS address of the domain controller instead, and then set the DNS addresses of the ISP on the PDC? Admittedly I'm confused on the whole DNS thing.

Basically I have AD running which of course requires DNS, and then my ISP has it's own DNS servers. Any help at getting this set up right would be a huge help.

Thanks a bunch.

Change the DNS on the workstations to your internal DNS and specify a gateway to handle Internet traffic.

thanks, I appreciate it... I'm going to try that tonight after everyone leaves..

On the internal DNS server itself, are there any specific things I need to do with the forward and reverse lookup zones? Any configuration specifics?

Again, thanks for the help.

Configure both of these...

In the DNS Management MMC right-click the DNS Server > Properties > Forwarders tab > Check the Enable forwarders > In the address box enter the IP address(es) of your ISP DNS server(s) > Click OK

I would also allow dynamic updates in Forward and Reverse zones (right-click the zone > Properties >General tab, select the Allow Dynamic Update check box, and then click OK to accept the change.

Just to let you know I got everything fixed right. I have two different domains running on the same network, with AD and DNS running on two different servers. Each server has multiple nics & IP addresses, so it required a lot trial and error, but I got it right. The logins and internet are smoking for both domains!

Thanks again for the info!
