I am replacing a server that belongs to a Domain. Now I removed the old server off the network, removed it's names from DNS and WINS. I now try to reassign the existing name to the new server, and I get an error that the existing name is already in use on the network. How do I flush the existing name out of the System so I may reuse it on the new server? Our entire Domain is in Win2k and we have multiple sites. We use Active Directory integrated DNS and WINS replication.

The original Computer NAME is registered with Dynamic DNS (from your DNS servers). Which clearing the DNS enter for the original machine well get rid of.

But it doesn't get rid of the original Machine SID. In NT 4 it was under server manager - There were all of the computer accounts created when PC join/leave the dmain.

In 2000 it's in Active Directory Users and COmputers. The original PCs SID is still there even though you physically removed the PC.

If the original PC is not physically on the Network, you should be able to bring up it's replacement (with the same name and IP, in a Workgroup at first). Then join it to the Domain, the Active Directory Server should be smart enough to delete the original SID and create a new one for the replaced PC.

If not and you can bring up the original PC, disjoin it from the Domain. This deletes the SID association from Active Directory.

If one of those work, you can Delte the SID/Computer account yourself. Then join the New PC to the domain. Good luck

SJafiu, what??? If you delete the computer account from AD, that's all you need. DNS has little if anything to do with this. This isn't an issue with SIDs.

I would be willing to bet your problem is with WINs. You will probably need to remove the entry from WINs and scavange the WINs database.
