Hello, and happy New Year.

My display problem occurred more or less spontaneously (no recent untoward events, no new software or hardware changes, etc.). The display shows shadow images of the toolbar, icons, etc. on different parts of the screen, sometimes vertically, sometimes horizontally. Sometimes after a few minutes of this the PC freezes beyond CTRL-ALT-DEL salvation.

To troubleshoot, I downloaded the latest video driver from Windows (NVIDIA Geforce 256 AGP), but this didn't help. I also changed the screen resolution to every possible setting, changed hardware acceleration from full to none and every step inbetween. After each of these changes the problem persists.

For now, the most stable setting seems to be a screen size of 800x600 with high color. Right-clicking on the background and choosing "Refresh" eliminates the shadow momentarily. Weirdly, running the mouse across the shadows at the bottom of the screen "erases" them but actually relocates them to the top of the screen.

Sorry, I'm starting to ramble. :-)

I've also scanned for viruses; none found.

Does it sound like a video card gone bad? And, is there any way to tell without actually swapping it out (since I don't have another one at hand)? Thanks.

Roadfood
