im trying to install windows 2000 and when i try it says disk read error for my hd...so i was just wondering wat could be wrong with the hard drive

Im not sure if it's a SATA drive...can i find out in the bios??
Its the original series with no service pack.

The hard drive information should be displayed during the POST screens. Write down the model number and post it here. You can freeze the screen during the POST by hitting the scroll lock or pause keys. Hit any key to resume.
I couldn't find that exact model at the HP site but I think you have a large SATA hard drive.
What version of Windows came pre-installed?

So the HP listed in your information at the top of the thread is not the computer in question?
The Toshiba appears to be a Laptop that came with a 40GB IDE hard drive.
Did you set the boot order to boot to the CD drive before the hard drive?
Is WinXP currently installed on the Laptop? Do you want to replace XP with 2000 or have both?

The hp in the thread is the computer.
I realized i typed the wrong model sorry.
Hp pavilion ze5300.i set the boot order to boot to the cd drive b4 the hard drive
nothing is currently on the computer right now

OK, there are two issues then. First is the SATA hard drive and the second is that you don't have any service packs included in your Win2000 CD.
Why did you wipe off WinXP? How did you wipe off WinXP?
You will need to add SP4 and the SATA drivers for your computer.
This is done by a method called slipstreaming. There are several ways to perform the slipstream but the correct SATA controller drivers are necessary. They MAY not even be available for Win2000. Most likely they are but may be hard to track down. OEM computer companies don't make it easy to get drivers and usually don't supply any drivers for an OS that didn't originally come on the computer.
Going back to the why of this change. Please explain your reasoning.

I didnt have a far back enough restore point.
NO recovery disk.
VERY slow because of the virus and at one point of time the taskbar went away and when i ran explore.exe all it did was flash. i got that problem to go away by running lots of different anti virus software. but then after that it was still slow where u couldnt even do ANYTHINGThis laptop is pretty old so the battery is pretty much gone and has 10 minute battery life when fully charged so its pretty much useless unless you are moving within the household to somewhere else. after i formated the drive when installing windows 2000 power unfortuanetlly went out and i started to have the problems

I am totally confused by your response. Is the HP computer A Laptop? In response #4 you also list a Toshiba laptop computer.

Does this look about like your specs?

You say the laptop is pretty old but I can't find that exact model. The 3500 series Notebooks are fairly new and seem to come with vista.
Post the numbers off the tag on the outside of the notebook.

Well, that same page has a link to download all the needed drivers for Win2000 so compatibility isn't an issue.
Why are you re-installing anyway? Some problem with the computer? May be a hardware issue.
When you start the laptop up can you see any information on the screen? Things like drives and RAM?

no im reinstalling because of a virus and i had no restore points. also no recovery disk for xp so im trying to put windows 2000 on it

here are two pics i took. i doubt they could be of any use though

ok...i added service pack 4 now wat do i do??
Do you mean you slipstreamed SP4 to your Win2000 CD?
Back in #8 I also mentioned slipstreaming the SATA drivers. The SATA drivers can be provided during the installation but they MUST be on a floppy that is accessable at the same time as your Win2000 CD in in use. With your laptop you probably can't do that.

That is an IDE drive and is only 40GB so 48 bit LBA is not an issue. You don't need SATA drivers either.
I'm not sure exactly what your installation issue is but the drive could be defective. I don't think Toshiba has a drive fitness utility that you can run to find out if the drive is the problem. Could be that the error message refers to the CD also.
I can't verify it but others here have stated that Hitachi's fitness test will work on all brands of drives.
Go to the Hitachi site and download it. Then boot to it to test the drive.
