Disk not formatted error

I have a disk that is full of information, however when I try to read it "Disk not formatted" is displayed. I not only fifteen minutes ago was updating a spreadsheet on the disk and took it out for a few minutes when I remembered that I had to update another file. Unfortunately, I cannot read anything on the disk anymore. Is all that data lost?

What kind of disk? Floppy, Zip, Hard Drive? And did you save your last entry?
