I have a W2K machine that was loaded about a month ago on a 6GB single partition HD. All of a sudden the disk is full. Looking back through the event logs, I can see an alert message saying the disk was getting full about 2 weeks ago. The problem is intermittent though. I can see nothing that explains why or what accounts for the space. Possible virus? Any other leads, please? Thanks

Virus can be detected by a good AntiVirus program properly updated.
Spyware may be downloaded to your computer by various websites.. get Spybot Search & Destroy at http://beam.to/spybotsd
be sure to check for updates before using.

System Restore points can be added forever, if not curtailed.. check the size of these files also.

Yes, as Geezer suggests, a virus check is advisable.

One other suggestion: You don't say how much data you have loaded (which includes OS), but depending on USED data space on your HD, plus amount of physical memory you have, Windows will give you a low space warning even though it may appear to you that you have lots of room left. This would be because Windows by default reserves a Page file on your hard disk to facilitate physical memeory, and that Page file is HIDDEN.

You may be able to test this theory out by manually adjusting your Page (or Swap) file to be lower, although performance would decrease. To see how to do this, just go to Start, Help, and search on "Virtual memory", then follows the instructions under "Changing the size of the virtual memory Paging file".

Regards.

Thanks all. File system is NTFS. We are running Norton Corp Edition antivirus. I did notice that the latest virus definitions had not been updated for some reason. That may be a permissions problem as I used xcacls to restrict several folders to admins, system and creator owner. Need to check to see what account NAV uses.
The disk properties sheet does show 100% usage though. Also, the pagefile is set to the same min/max value 192MB. I'll let you know what happens. Any further suggesions are definitely welcome.

Can you check whether theres any Webserver or any other servers running in your PC which generates certaing Runtime Logs ?

Sometimes this type of problem may occur due to this.

I don't believe it is full. I think it's either being reported as full, or a virus has corrupted the disk. Data, application or system files do not account for all this. Used space on the disk was a maximum of 2GB a month ago. Now it says 6GB. I listed all files over ?MB and I can not see any very large files so I can' account for 100% utilization.
