Disk I/O Error

Comment:

Just 'loaded' W2K Pro over NT4 SP5 on a Maxtor 8.4 Gb H/D. Previously I have successfully loaded W2K on the same drive from its virgin state, so I know the machine can take it.

Anyway, on the restart after loading all the files, I get:

Disk I/O Error State 00000001
NTDETECT

I have tried viewing the boot disk as a slave to an NT4 master, and it is visible. So I tried booting from it as a 'dual boot' machine (i.e. multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)) but I got the same error, with the additional error message "Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \system32\hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the disk file."

I checked and hal.dll is there, dated 10 Sept 1999 (i.e. after the April 199 modified NT4 SP5 version)

Any Ideas?

I've had the same problem and spent approx. much hours fixing it. The NT4 boot files are NOT compatible with 2k and you MUST use the 2k boot files (how to: see below). Also, do not switch any physical disks in your computer with each other (especially when you have mirrors or stripes) or with an other computer, because your NTFS partition may become inaccessible. It happened to me and I lost 10 gig of important data.

Replacing the boot files:
Let's say you have 2 partitions, A and B, and both of them using NT or 2k. Mark partition A active and hide partition B (using Partition Magic rescue disks for example.)
Now start Windows 2k installation using the CD. Choose 'repair', no emergency disk and then automatic repair.
When this is done, you mark partition B active and hide partition A. Now write a w2k bootsector using the same procedure as above. You now have a full w2k bootsector, and nt4 is also able to boot from this bootsector.
Also, missing system files in the winnt\system32 directory are now replaced.
Finally, replace your diskstate (active and hidden disks) and your system has to run OK.
Worked fine with me.

I did all those idea that you guys suggest, I don't think it works....

I have a IBM 75gxp 45GB, and partitioned to C:\15GB, D:\15GB, E:\15GB. C and D are NTFS and E is FAT32. I had Win2k on C: before and something when wrong, then I formatted my C: and reinstall Win2k.

Right before booting up Win2k, I saw a message "Disk I/O Error Stats = 00000001" on the screen, it flashed really quick, then Win2k continues to boot. It works fine tho. I tired reformat, reinstall and deleted C partition and recreate C.

Anyone has any idea? It just bothers me when I see werid message even the PC works fine.
