Currently i have 3 comps networked, win2k, XP home and XP pro.
The network is running perfectly apart from one problem, when i try to access the files on the 2k comp from the XP/H comp i get a password prompt.
I do not get this prompt when i try to access the 2k from the XP professional.

Any ideas?

Make sure that on the computer that is giving you a login prompt, that there is a user with the same username and password as on the other three machines.

It also could be how XP Home logs on to computers. The networking features are stripped down from XP Professional. It may be interacting differently than the way XP Pro and 2000 pro do. In that case there may not be anything you can do.

XP home is not as network friendly as the pro version. Create an account for it on the win2k box, if that fails try this.

Enable the everyone account, it is off by default, then under permissions for the shared folder/drive and the group anonymous logins.

You know that doing this will open up the computer to literally anybody to get to.

Thanks for your help i created a username on the 2k comp that was the same as the administrator account name on the XP home machine. The username "Administrator" was already allowed that was why the comp logged in as "administrator" wasnt getting a prompt.
heh, if HP hadnt made their default admin as "Owner" i wouldnt have had the bloody problem :-/

Hello Mordahl,

Not clear if you solved your problem so :

i HAD the same problem : but i donot have it
anymore ;)

Look at net use /?

example which works / is tested :

(adapt to your own data)

NET USE \\laptopw2k\c my Password /USER:
My network(domain)name\administrator

You can make a batch file of it or
use it together with Auto-IT, that great
freeware program.

Hope this helps

Theo

Hello again,

Below the Auto_It code and the bat file
which is tested and works ok.

(You need Auto-It freeware from http://hiddensoft.com)

Good luck,

Theo.

; LoginLaptopw2k.aut

; 18/12/2002

; this Auto-It program runs loginlaptopw2k.bat
; which automatically logs in from Desktop-XP to Laptop.
; author : T.Lockefeer
; tested : yes ; known problems : no.

RunWait,%Comspec% /c c:\\loginLaptopW2K.bat, c:\\,hide

; the auto-it program code.

;

; below the bat file which is executed :
;
;C:\>type loginlaptopw2k.bat
;
;
;netuse\\laptopw2k\cmypassword /USER:Theow2k;homelan\administrator
