How can i disable the F8 menu in windows 2000 and if different 95/98se, we have the problem of students formating 98 via safemode.
Thanks

I don't know if that is possible......however, I wager if you had the next culprit arrested and charged with vandalism and expelled that student from school you would find the instances of this behaviour would slow down if not stop entirely.

Vandalism? Expulsion? Come on Curt. We were all impish little teenagers at one point.
As for your question Tom, yes it is possible in 95/98. I've never tried it on 2000 so I don't know if it works or not. Edit your msdos.sys file and add an entry that says BootKeys=1. This will disable the F8 and F5 feature for bypassing Windows. Be sure to disable boot from floppy too and set a password on the BIOS so they can't edit it from DOS.
If you're having that many problems with security you should consider investing in some security software. They can be a pain to support at times but for situations like this it works marvelous. I have worked with Fortres101 and Clean Slate--both good.
Hope this helps.

then again you COULD just rename/hide the .com files (unless they are using a diskette). kind hard to format anyhting if format.com isnt there....

There no way I am aware of to diable f8... They reason it exist is if need get to safe mode..
I would change the NTFS that way windows 98 can not refort drive. Also disable the floppy boot and cd-romn from the cmos and password the bios. Also DO NOT give admin right to W2K pro...
Good luck
