I bought a generic PCI modem with the Intel 536EP chipset. My connection *always* stalls after anything between 2 and 10 minutes online - I'm not disconnected by the ISP, the time ticks on, but all data transfer stops, web pages and downloads freeze and I have to redial.
The modem comes with a W2k driver. I've searched the net for an updated one and installed a few hoping that would cure the problem.
If I install Windows ME on the same PC the modem works without a hitch, but I need to run W2k to utilise both CPU's in this dual processor workstation.
Exactly the same problem occurs using an earlier V90 modem using an Intel chipset. The only modem I can get to work reliably with W2k is my old external 33.6k which I'm using now.
Any ideas what this stalling can be caused by?

Have you tried this one: Intels51.sys for windows XP? Driverguide.com has it.
I've used it with good results, but I finally got rid of the modem. Seems I recall something about noise generation on the phone lines not being tolerated by this modem.

Hi Steve,
I get almost EXACTLY the same problem on Win XP SP1. However, I suspect mine IS related to my ISP, OneTel, which disconnects you after two hours. With my older PC/modem, this caused an annoying disconnection, but Win XP would immediately offer to reconnect you. With this new modem, XP hangs, lots of invisible porocesses/tasks hang, you're forced to reboot, and even that forces you to kill some unresponsive processes. If you found a solution, do let me know!
