Hello there guys, i just finished installing my Win2k Server and has activated Active Directory and DHCP Server

the thing is. i set my IP scope from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.10

So, i setup a Windows Account in the active directory for a user to test out.

After the workstation successfully logged in, i do ipconfig /all to it (assuming its using Win2k Pro). When i look at the IP, it does not reflect to the one i set the scope for... am i doing something wrong here?

Also, when i look at the Server's ip it starts with something like 169.58. bla bla bla... but i wanted it to have ip address of 192.168.1.1 (for example that is). WHere did i do wrong?

please help... and thanx

network newbie.

The address you are seeing is probably 169.254.x.x right? This is Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA). It means the client is not reaching the DHCP server for an address so it is assigning itself an IP.

I would check your cabling, and that sort of thing to see if you really are making the connection. The problem is not with your DHCP server necessarily, it is a problem of the client not reaching the server or the service not runnning or something like that.

hiay there

glen said your clients are not connecting to the server which is correct but you need to assign a static ip address to your server so set the scope from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.10 and set your server ip address as 192.168.1.1. you cannot assign yourself an address from dhcp server for the server. the clients will then have an address let me know how you get on if you are unsure how to assign static ip let me know yeah

hope this helps

heya newtechie,

so what your are saying is that i need to setup my server's ip address from the TCP/IP connection properties rite?

ok I got some other problems...
I want my windows client can only access the internet resources (browsing, yahoo messeger etc.. ) by logging to the domain, and there's a gateway server installed using win2kserver (separate machine with the Domain Controller server).
1. How do i go about configuring my Domain Controller so that any point in time should there exists a user logged in using his windows account he can access the internet.. ? what are the steps necessary to make this happen??

thanx again guys for ur help.. hope those advance network guys out there can help me out .

network newbie,
