I cant get my desktop background to come up at all. On the desktop it says "Action Canceled" Internet explorer was unable to link to the web page you requested...blah, blah, blah. The links are still there though and I can still open the icons on the desktop. It's just that I have this big "Action Canceled" page as my background. I've run everything from ad aware to spybot and cw shredder and still nothing. Once after I ran spybot and restarted my cpu, the real background came back up after restart but only for like 5 seconds and then it went back to the Action canceled thing. If anybody is familiar with this problem and has any advice at all please help! my email is mlfaust@tampabay.rr.com

It sounds like you have Active Desktop enabled, and it can no longer load whatever content it was set to display.

To disable Active Desktop, go to the display properties control panel and click the Web tab. Uncheck "Show Web content on my Active Desktop".

Please post back and let me know if that works.

What you have is some adware that has taken over your browser and is trying to connect to the intenet and load new popup constantly. Get the latest version of adaware. Boot in safe mode so you aren't connected to the internet. Run a deep scan with adware. Wwhen finished go to control panel -- ad/remove programs and look for enhance search or menu programs -- programs with names you don't use for normal activities. Delete 'em. Then reboot normally. That should take care of the problem although there are some nasty ones such as ZestyFind that may be able to avoid even those measures.

How did you get "popup" from "desktop"?

Sounds like somehow you managed to save the browser website as your desktop background or desktop item. If that's the case, right click in Desktop, select properties and from Desktop properties under Background Tab, select a different background picture and save it clicking Apply and Ok.

iamc,

i turned off the active desktop and the backrounds back, but i have one more problem that i think is related to it. every time i try and open something on the desktop or anywhere on my computer, i get a dialog box titled "Error" and the message "Explorer!" written inside the box. The file will still open but this message always comes up first. Its the family computer so i think it has to do with all of the crap that my sister downloads onto this thing. any help would be appreciated. i'd like to fix the problem without having to reload windows, but it's looking like that's the only solution. thanks again for your help.

If your sister is downloading and installing a lot of software, that very likely is the cause of the problem.

To begin troubleshooting, you can run AdAware and let it remove anything it finds. I have a feeling adware isn't the problem though. More likely, some poorly written program installed a shell extention or something like that. If that's the case, you might be able to fix the problem by uninstalling the responsible program. You can do that by opening the Add/Remove Programs applet in the control panel and uninstalling any unfamiliar programs there.

Try that, and post back if you still need help.
