Delay on opening Outlook attachment

I see long delay when I try to open Word or Excel files attached to my emails using Microsoft Outlook. Any idea? thanks.

usualy, the attached files open within 2-3 seconds but sometimes it takes 30-60 soconds to open the attachment. this happens on workstations not on any particular order. It might happen on any email at different times. We run Exchange Server 2003 on our mail server. and Microsoft Outlook 2003 on workstations.

Does this happen on more than one machine/profile ? If you send this to another person does the lag still occur ? Do you have preview pane enabled ? How big are these files ? Does the lag only occur when you send attatchments ?
