Defrag will display but will not run? the only changes made have been downloading the critical patches from MS. Anyone else had this problem that can point me in the right direction. Thanks, Old Salt.

Try booting to safe mode and running your defrag there.

Which defragmenter are you using? If its the Windows Disk Defragmenter, its best run in safe mode where no other process clashes with it. If that doesnt work, try a third party tool.

The logon account needs to be a local administrator to run defragmenter. Try dbl clicking the time in the system tray to see if you can change the time settings. If you receive a messge after dbl clicking you aren't an admin and will need to use a local admin account.

Hi Curt R, I was able to use the defrag in normal mode every second day with no problems till now, I get the display up but it just will not run after selecting the only hard drive on board, also will not analyze, just nothing happens? That's the only change I recall. the above has a new defragger as part of the download-update. I can run Diskkeeper lite, but am hoping the new defrager is better, DKL leaves directories all over the place. Hi Pt Cruiser, I am the only user and admin on this machine, so have full access. Can I be the only one with this problem? Should I un-install SP4 and download again, will take a while on dial up....
