defrag doesn't seem to do anything, see link below for before and after pic of defrag, the top bar is before the defrag and the bottom is after, there is no change and its mostly still red?
any idea's how to get a 'real' defrag?
thanks, bob

Something seems horribly wrong...could it be the colors somehow got screwed up? When's the last time you scanned for viruses, spyware or ran a cleaner such as CCleaner?

Try running defrag from safe mode.

What does the Report show? My guess is your pagefile is taking up quite a bit of HDD space and the file is severely fragmented and cannot be assembled in contiguous space.

When you analyze the drive in disk management what does it report? The colors seem to be wrong but the drive doesn't necessarily look fragmented.

thanks for the replies, it doesn't appear to be the pagefile, but that number of defragment files = 713 doesn't make sense at all
some of the report is at this link

i have defraged other drives and had much better results than this

Volume (C:):
Volume size = 8,001 MB
Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 6,276 MB
Free space = 1,724 MB
Percent free space = 21 %

Volume fragmentation
Total fragmentation = 28 %
File fragmentation = 50 %
Free space fragmentation = 6 %

File fragmentation
Total files = 38,402
Average file size = 212 KB
Total fragmented files = 713
Total excess fragments = 27,518
Average fragments per file = 1.71

Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size = 576 MB
Total fragments = 2

Directory fragmentation
Total directories = 3,057

Excess directory fragments = 4

Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 122 MB

I have seen red that would not defrag. SQL database files for example. Other programs that install and lock the space can also appear undefragged.

I used to know of older tools that would tell you what program/file occupied a cluster but don't know of any today that provides that functionality.

Perhaps google or someone here can suggest one.

You may also want to run chkdsk /r , answer yes to the question and reboot so it runs. This will check for file system corruption and the health of the platter surface. You should always have a good backup before running it.

I think you're low enough on free disk space that defrag can't do its job. If you can't delete a bunch of junk files to free up some disk space, set the swapfile size to 2Mb minimum and maximum.

Reboot and try defrag again.

BTW, follow jam's advice to use ccleaner. It'll usually free up an amazing amount of disk space. You also need to answer his virus/spyware question.

My understanding is defrag can't work at 15% free space. bbxrider has 21%

My two cents on the threshold for Defrag.

I believe defrag won't even start if there is less than 15% free space. That has been my experience.

That said, if the mix of files is such that a large percentage of files are large, defrag may not be able to relocate any particular file due to the lack of sufficient free contiguous space.

I can conceive where this could happen with 21% free space.

hanks everybody for the replies. after cleaner, and reducing pagefile to 10mb got free space up to 32%. now defrag actually gets something done, see graph for latest
http://img391.imageshack.us/img391/...
have run defrag about 6 times, each time gets more defragmented. guess i just have to keep running, till it tells me its ok?
one weird thing. i know graph pic is small but if you can see the biggest blue band towards the right side, showing contiguous. that should be free space, its still 32%, it shows that on explorer properties. when i first got the 32% free space, the defrag graph had that 'white' or free space, now it always shows it as contig space?
and i run norton, winpatrol and avg, with scheduled full scans. hopefully i'm ok with all that
except maybe for a rootkit? those sound nasty

Are you running defrag in safe mode?

Most items in the task manager will not be active so the defrag should go faster. Running programs may not be allowed to move. You mention AV programs. These may cause issues if running due to changes in the disk.

Did you attempt to defrag due to a problem or just as regular maintenance.

It may be showing free space as contiguous space because defrag is using it just like when you had 21%.

It may take awhile but I think you're on the right track if defrag keeps moving files every time you run it.

Any way you can backup to usb or dvd?

Ideally you could backup huge amounts of files, run defrag and then restore. Restore will write the files back contiguous [defragged]. This is an old dos defrag trick that still works today. You would use ntbackup which is built into the OS.

I would also suggest using explorer and Sort.

Use search starting at the root [c:\] for *.* [which is all files]. Then click on the size column to sort on file size. What you are looking for are large files. What folder do they reside in? What program is associated with that folder?

What you are experiencing is not normal and you need to find an explaination or move to a much larger hard drive asap.
