System maintenance recommended I defrag my drives. I tried to defrag my C and E drive and was able to defrag C drive but when defragging E drive system froze. Had to shut down manually and now when i restart PC it will only boot to the win 2000 screen. The boot goes 1/2 way thru the blue bar startup screen and then freezes and again i have to shut down manually. I tried restarting in safe mode and normal boot mode etc. The only mode i can start in is safe mode with networking. If i try to use any applications the system again freezes. Im using an IBM personal computer 300PL with pentium 2 with 4 gig. PLEEEEEZ HELP!!!!!!

Try repair using the Win2K CD but you will need to change the booting order of your computer beforehand. When you start up your computer, press the Delete key (sometimes it is F2 or F5) for the BIOS screen to appear. There you will be able to change the booting sequence to CDROM being first. Save and reboot. During the boot you will need to press a key so that it boots off the W2K CD. When choices appear as Install, Repair etc. Choose Repair, then Fast. When finished allow it to reboot to Windows and see if your problem has been resolved. It usally is resolved.
If it hasn't been then you could repeat the process using Manual repair. This process, however, reinstalls all original files and you will need to update after the process. Click "Yes to All" to replace the existing files with the original ones from the CD. This process will not overwrite your Data files. Windows will now work but you will need to go through the update process again. If you haven't got the SP4 update disk then get one from MS, it's free. When it is finished, while rebooting, change the sequence back to the original one, save and proceed.

defrag didnt cause it, a locked file or a bad sector on the partition caused it ot lock up (assuming a pwr scheme or something didnt kick in

Don't you love it when people are rude after you provided info to help them?

"Republicans in Congress are moving to ratify a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning, thus ending the Iraq insurgency."
