Have you checked which process is hogging all the resources? You've probably already done this, but use CTRL-Alt-Del to go to the task manager and switch to Processes. A normally running machine with no apps running usually has the System Idle process taking up most (90-99%) of the CPU processor. You can click on the CPU usage column to get the task manager to sort by cpu usage. Once you determine which process is hogging the resources, post it - that should help narrow the problem.

are you running a personal firewall, zonealarm has a process called vsmon which hogs cpu and runs at 100% after continued internet/network access. instead of dropping off it increases cpu cycles when nothing is goin on. the only way i have found to sort this, is to end the process which kills zonealarm temporarily. restaring the app then remedies the probs.

would be happy if anyone knows why this is?
