Subject: CPU usage at 100%OS: Windows 2000 ProfessionalCPU/Ram: Pentium 4 /128 MB RDRAM |
Comment: I found out that I had a virus a couple of days ago but Norton would not delete it and I could not delete it manually. It was a backdoor.sdbot virus named syscfgr32.exe. I was able to run my comp in safe mode and actually delete it through Norton Anti virus. But I noticed that my comp was still acting funny. I hit ctrl+alt+delete and my CPU usage was at 100%. Their is barely anything running in the background and no matter what I do, it stays at 100%. When I run in safe mode, it no longer is at 100%. Please help with any suggestions. I hope I dont have to reformat and reload the OS again. I have windows 2000. Dells tech support likes to give me that solution for every problem. Also what's a good firewall or a good way to keep from getting more viruses?

Reply: (edit)Explorer.exe is using the most % at 5,116 K. That's not a lot at all. I dont know why it's still at 100%

Reply: (edit)Ok let take this one step at a time. A) syscfgr32.exe is not the name of a virus/Trojan but one of the symptom's or incdications of infection. B) 100CPU% is not the same thing as 5,116K (thats memory) Solution) Go to WWW.Google and type in backdoor.sdbot. Got to the Symantic web page and follow the instructions. C) I like Zone Firewall(free version), Nortons or Mcaffee for anti-virus and Adaware for spyware_spybots. The reason you got infected is your own lack of awareness and precaution. Live and learn.

Reply: (edit)Uh please keep speaking to me like I'm a child. I know it's a backdoor.sdbot virus. And I know that syscfgr32.exe was the infected file. Not the virus. Also I was replying to the previous comment about which was taking up most of the memory in my process box. I'm not an idiot. Quit trying to speak like you know it all! Also when I was away someone downloaded Kazaa on my computer and I know that that's how I got the virus. I've tried the other crap you said and it didnt work. I told you that the infected file has been deleted and NAV or any other program I've used does not show any sign of a virus anymore. But my CPU usage is still at 100%. So thanks but no thanks. I'd like to speak to someone who really knows what they're talking about.

Reply: (edit)You were pretty hard on CBR, chill out man, we all have one common goal - that is to help each other. There are alot of simplistic questions here that could be answered just by the HELP file, but we all try to treat each other with the same respect and with kids gloves. WHY? Simply put...most times it is just a simple error or something forgotten. So lighten up or no-one will want to answer your questions. I was going to say check out the task manager and see what file is using all the CPU%, but I'm not too sure now if I'll get chewed out for saying it.

Reply: (edit)i have had the problem where the cpu usuage is 100% when nothing is barley running. I think it depends on your software configuration. i have had win 2000 running on an p166mmx before, it ran slow but it's cpu usage was at about 3% without any background programs. On the other hand i have seen a amd 500 with 128mb and a 1 gig athlon with 256mb run constanly with 100% cpu usage. it sometimes happens after running software or installing new programs. It happened to my after running some music playing software. I would recommend reinstalling win 2000 and see if that will fix it since the virus or scanning software may have done the have caused the problem.

Reply: (edit)The file that is using 99% of the cpu is realsched.exe. Another thing I forgot to mention. When I hit run and type in msconfig, it says that it is unable to find msconfig and it is invalid or something like that. I'm not on my home computer to see exactly what the error message says right now.

Reply: (edit)msconfig is a windows 9x utility. I'm not sure what realsched.exe is, but my fist guess would be a module of Real Player. Search for that file on google, and if it is, try re-installing real player (if in fact it is installed.)

Reply: (edit)Thanks for all the help guys! I ended the process that was taking up all the CPU% (realsched.exe) and my CPU% is at 0-3% now. I looked it up on google and found out that it's a program that is loaded with realplayer (like you said) that updates it periodically. But another wierd thing that pops up when I start my computer is a small toolbar with the MIRC icon on it for about 10 seconds and then it goes away. I dont have Mirc but for some reason it does that on startup. And my zonealarm asks to allow it permission everytime. It asks if I want to allow the Internet Relay Chat task32.exe to have access to the internet. I deny access because I dont know what it's doing.

Reply: (edit)Seems like someone has been installing crap on your PC. First, kick off Kazaa, if you haven't already, and install Kazaa Lite if you really need that s---. Kazaa takes up all of your CPU when loaded. Then, remove the MIRC from the startup-menu and from MSconfig/startup. Then, go kick the person who has been installing crap without consulting you, leaving you with the mess. realsched.exe can indeed take up a lot of resources, disable the auto-update in Realplayer and you should be fine.

Reply: (edit)I have deleted Kazaa and I don't want it. But Mirc is not in my startup. I actually dont have Mirc anywhere on my computer. But the icon that Mirc uses does pop up upon startup and then goes away. The only thing I found on my computer that has the Mirc Icon is task32.exe . My zonealarm detects it everytime I restart my computer. It asks if I want to let the Internet Relay Chat client task32.exe access to the internet. I want to get rid of it but I don't know what the task32.exe is. Please help
