I am running Win. 2000 Pro. on a NTFS based machine with an AMD processor. I have noticed that the machine runs slow and the mouse pointer "jumps" around the screen. I checked my usage and its continuously over 95%-even after a reboot with no applications loaded. I installed service packs, reformatted, and everything else I can think of.

You need to find out what process is consuming the cpu. Open Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, then click on the CPU heading to sort by CPU usage and see what process is using the CPU and go from there.

I checked the Task Manager and the System Idle Process is running at about 95-99.

System Idle Process = amount of NOT USED resources.
That indicates how much of your unit IS NOT being used.

My process running at 99% is svchost.exe, not System Idle.
With the above running at 99% obviously my system is running very slow, what should I do

I am running XP Pro, and I recently noticed the same problem with svchost running at 99% or so CPU usage for no reason. I can go into the processes tab in Task Manager, and end the process. Then a box appears stating that the system will shut down in one minute. You can then run cmd. and type in Shutdown -a to abort the shutdown. This is the only way so far that i've been able to stop scvhost. I don't know why it is using so much cpu.

Ok, I figured it out. I uninstalled QoS Packet Scheduler from in the network control panel. This got rid of the problem.

I haveing the same problem, and I'm suprised that nobody has posed a solution! I going to try to find out. If I find a solution I'll post it here. I'm not sure if has to do with a swapfile or fragmentation.

I'd recommend going to www.k7v.com and searching on svchost - I've seen (and contributed) a few posts that are helpful on this scenario.

If anyone finds it helpful, perhaps some of the useful posts there can be moved to this board.

Good Luck

I have the same problem with win2k and svchost.exe running at 99%-CPU. until now i didn't find any helpful solution.

Fortunately after 10 min the CPU usage of svchost.exe goes back to 0% and I can work normally.

I have been suffering from this problem ever since I upgraded to Win2000 Pro and then to XP. This becomes a problem when the machine was docked and undocked, and hybernated many times (usually 5 or 6). The only way to revive the machine is to reboot it.

I am very grateful to any suggestions how to avoid this problem.

My particular problem was with a Microtek Scanner. There was a program running called SDII.exe. The *second* I shut it down, my cpu usage dropped from 100% to 16%. The suspected SVCHOST culprit suddenly became a non-factor.
