I had a dual boot of linux 6.0 and Windows 2000 RC2.
i wanted to remove lilo, and ran lilo -u
then Windows 2000 would not boot.fdisk /mbr would not work.
i followed instructions for recovery at the Microsoft website:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q121/5/17.ASPbut i could not find (or incorrectly copied) the backup boot sector for Win 2000?
does anyone know where this is kept? I am using diskedit.exe of Norton utilities.
or does anyone know how to fix this boot sector problem?
thanks

Install a parallel copy of win 2000 to a differnt root directory %otherwinnt%
While in the second win 2000
1. make the 4 setup bootdisks (to have incase set 2 does not work)2. edit the boot.ini file to reflect the location of the original install of 2000.
3. reboot the machine. This should work it you edited the boot.ini file.
3a. 1. Start the computer from the Windows 2000 Setup disk 1.
2. When you are prompted, insert disk 2.
3. When you are prompted for what you want to do, press R to select Repair.
4. Clear all the check boxes except the "Inspect boot sector" box, select
Continue, and then press ENTER.5. When you are prompted, insert disk 3.
6. When you are prompted, insert the ERD.
7. When you see the following message, press ENTER:
Setup has completed repairs.
If there is a floppy disk inserted in drive A:, remove it.
Press ENTER to restart your computer.
