Corrupt .cab file problem when installing.
I have tried to install new software from CD to my PC but I'm getting constantly the same error message: 'Data1.cab file corrupt'. So, a) is the CD faulty or b) is there something wrong with my PC settings or with the hardware or c) am I just plain stupid? My PC fulfills all the system & hardware requirements of the software and I haven't had similiar kind of installing difficulties with other CDs or have been able to solve occurring problems until now. I'm out of ideas what to do next. Should I be able to install this software by using some kind of fancy bypass method altough the program informs me that '.cab file is corrupted', or should I return the CD back to the firm that sold it to me by claiming that they sold me a faulty product?

Are you install straight from the CDRom at Boot ?

If so, you can attempt to initalize the install from the Four (4) boot Floppies.

The Boot Floppy images can be downloaded from Microsft or created from the 2000 CD.

In the Boot folder there's a makeboot which well create the boot disk. Once you get the boot disk, set the PC to boot from Floppy first and floow the Wizard.

This may get past teh error. Hard to say if it's the CDrom drive or the CDrom Media. Unles you've used this same Cdorom Media previously with no errors. Good Luck

Now that's a new one! Anything - according this installation problem - that I could have been able to figure out by myself hasn't worked yet, so I better try following Your advice. I'll be back here after trying and report what happened. Thank You for taking Your time answering me.

i don't know if this applies to your situation or not but sometimes a faulty ram module can cause that error. your computer may operate normally with a faulty module but when it comes to running setup it is a very cpu and memory intensive task and it can throw up errors that you do not get under normal usage.

Problem solved!
Managed to install the software after several attempts: cleaned the CD with soft dry cloth and kept trying the installation again and again. About the 10th attempt and no error messages anymore, the whole installation process worked smoothly and the software was installed just like it should.
Maybe the surface of the CD had some dust particles or dirt stains on it and maybe my DVD device may have had also some dust on it's reader, I can't tell for sure. I think I learned a valuable lesson: troubleshoot first the simplest possibilities.
NB: a) and b) were incorrect choises...
